-- Petronius Arbiter, (Jan 0 27-66), Italian Latin writer; Latin writer, supposed to be the Gaius Petronius whom Tacitus called arbiter elegantiae (arbiter of taste) at the court of Nero. He is generally believed to be the author of Satyricon, a satirical romance in prose and verse about the licentious life of the upper class in S Italy, fragments of which have been preserved. Accused of conspiring against Nero, he committed suicide.
